Anyone who wanted to buy-in to the ECOSTT 2009 Main Event had to pay €2,200 for the privilege, but the opportunity to qualify online meant that players all over Europe had a shot at winning their way to the final. The fact that one such qualifier did even better and went on to win the Main Event demonstrates just how well online poker players can fare in the offline game, and should encourage other online players to have a go at more online qualifiers.

“I am delighted to be crowned the first European Champion of Single Table Tournaments,” said Rui Vieira, winner of the Main Event. “The whole tournament was a fantastic experience and very well organised. I was not expecting to win. The competition was extremely tough but being able to play four rounds of poker to win enough points to make it to the Main Event final was an excellent tournament structure. It is great that the Microgaming Poker Network has launched a major live tournament aimed at STT players.”

Mark Pinan of Microgaming said: “The event was extremely well received. The fourth round of the Main Event was particularly tense with players vying for the extra points needed to go through to the final tables. With our shallow pay structure, we are delighted that almost half the field went home in the cash throughout the whole event. Player feedback has been extremely positive for this unique tournament which recognises the skills of top STT players.”
