Basic Poker Instructions

To start with the person to the left of the dealer button always posts the small blind. The person next to the small blind in a clockwise action posts the big blind, and the person to the left of the big blind will be first to act (Fig.1). These blinds are ante bets and are customary in poker in order to get the action started, by forcing the players to call, check, raise or fold.

After the blinds are posted every player involved in the hand is dealt two cards in a clockwise action. These cards are called "Hole Cards" (Fig.2), and No one else should be able to see them, so keep them close. Now comes the first round of betting. The person directly left to the Big blind is first to act. So based on the strength of their hand, they either call the blind. Raise the blind to a nominal bet, or fold.

The person next to the person who just acted in a clockwise action then decides what to do with their cards. They can either call the bet, raise the bet, or fold their hand depending on how strong or good they feel their hand is. This process goes on until everybody has either folded, raised or called inturn. The remaining players who stayed in the hand then see the first three community cards, known as the Flop. In Fig.2 below you can see 3 players stayed in the hand to see the flop, and three players folded pre-flop.

After the flop the person in the small blind is the person too act first in the second round of betting. They can either Check, Fold or Bet. The other players then have 4 choices to either call the bet, if the first person bet out. To raise the bet if the first person bet out, or too fold their cards and forfeit any money they may of put into the pot. There is one other poker rule you can use and that is too check. You can "check" only if the person before you didnt make a bet. By "checking" you are in effect saying you do not wish to place any money into the pot and are willing to see the next card for free. (Or if its the last action in the hand you "check" to turn the cards over and see who has won the hand.)

There are two more rounds of betting, with the 4th card being called the TURN, and the 5th and last community card being called the RIVER. There are only 5 community cards dealt out in any one game of poker, and you and every other player now have to make the best possible hand with the two cards you hold and the 5 community cards on the table (Fig.3).

Once the 5 community cards are dealt out, there is one last round of betting or bluffing, depending on your cards and how you are playing. And depending if the person checked or called the cards are turned over and the winning hand is determined via the Poker Hand Rankings set out in the rules of poker.
