Joe Cada is 2009 WSOP Champion
The World Series of Poker Main Event is always the highlight of the year, and this year’s Main Event has been every bit as exciting as we expected it to be. The 2009 WSOP Main Event winner was 21 year old Joseph Cada (who is generally referred to as Joe) from Michigan, and he picked up a first prize of $8.55 million after beating 46 year old Darvin Moon in a gruelling head-to-head that lasted almost three hours.
There were 6,494 entrants in the 2009 WSOP Main Event, so Joe Cada knew that becoming the ultimate Champion was never going to be a walk in the park. However, with six years of experience under his belt (which is pretty substantial for a 21 year old) Joe progressed through to the final table. After seeing off the likes of Phil Ivey, the 2009 WSOP Main Event came down to a head-to-head between Joe and Darvin.
Joe had $135 million worth of chips when he entered the head-to-head phase of the tournament, but that stack dwindled to around $40 million after Darvin made a very strong start. Joe stuck in there and recovered, but it took almost three hours of back and forth action before Joe finally emerged the victor.
The $10,000 entry fee that Joe paid to participate in the 2009 WSOP Main Event was bankrolled by a group of investors who thought he had potential to do well. In return, it was agreed that the backers would receive 50% of any prize money that Joe won. As we said at the outset, Joe picked up $8.55 million for winning the tournament, so the faith of his backers was rewarded more highly than they had probably dared to imagine.
Although the 2009 World Series of Poker has now come to an end – and we congratulate Joe on becoming the new WSOP Champion – we can now look forward to WSOP 2010.
